Cafe Katja: Reviews & Ratings
I just love it here. Delicious and interesting comfort food, kind staff and a warm, casual ambiance. Everything is fresh and feels made with love. it is charming sitting outside in summer watching the world go by, and a delightful glowing shelter in winter. This is a favorite spot. It DOES get a bit too crowded and therefore loud sometimes, I prefer it at "off-peak" moments.
I do not normally do reviews however, i stumbled into Cafe Katja and there was a wine tasting menu. I chose a wine by FUCHS. I was not really paying attention to the menu, but moments after ordering, the wine glass was brought by a soft spoke gentlemen who introduced himself as Heinrich Fuchs. I did not put the details together however , after a brief intro he proceeded to tell me about his vineyards in Austria that him and his family have tended too for generations. Being served your wine by the guy who cares for and owns the vineyards is awesome. After that happened i had to order food and enjoy the ambiance. Mr Fuchs recommended the schnitzel since my wine was a white wine. I got the schnitzel with spatzle (Austrian noodles) since i really didn’t want potatoes. This place is a gem , everyone was welcoming service was great and the hot tattooed german girl Miri was unfortunately married. But i’ll be back for sure.
Came here for dinner before a late movie at the theater nearby. We planned poorly and didn’t make a reservation in advance, so the neighboring restaurant was unable to accommodate our group of 5. (It was a Friday night, after all…) Boy were we glad to have accidentally stumbled across Cafe Katja! Despite the fact that it was quite busy and our relatively large group size, they were able to seat us very quickly. The inside of the restaurant was simple and a bit rustic, with great mood lighting and a lively atmosphere. Service was fast and friendly. On to the most important part: THE FOOD! The food here was absolutely amazing! One of the best meals I’ve had in recent memory. No joke. We started off with a pretzel and brussels sprouts, which were tasty, but the real stars were the main dishes. I personally ordered the jägerschnitzel with spätzle and mushroom sauce. While eating it, I was making sounds that made my boyfriend jealous. Others at the table ordered the braised short ribs and Austrian meatballs, which were equally delicious! The ruben might have been the largest sandwich I’ve ever seen. Everything was truly scrumptious. Chef’s kiss, no notes! Will definitely be returning to the LES soon if for no other reason than to come back to Cafe Katja. Kisses!
this place was everything we wanted and more when it comes to good food and atmosphere. definitely try to sit outside when the weather is nice. it’s the perfect spot for people watching and catching up with drinks and food. we tried the gulash soup (tasted great and very similar to consume), wiener schnitzel (gigantic and tasty), and the emmentaler sausage (delicious). will be coming back soon.
The restaurant boasts a selection of Austrian and Bavarian beers, including Stiegl and Gösser, served in a warm, tavern-like setting adorned with brick walls and rustic decor . The ambiance is reminiscent of a European tavern, making it an ideal spot for casual dinners and enjoying steins of beer with friends
Cozy LES gem—Cafe Katja nails that warm, intimate Austrian neighborhood feel with low lighting, wood accents, and super welcoming energy. Perfect for a relaxed dinner or drinks. Food was hearty and satisfying: Emmentaler sausage juicy and flavorful, beef goulash rich with tender meat, and the Austrian meatballs were a standout—savory, well-seasoned. Sides like red cabbage and spaetzle hit the spot too. Service was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable—great beer/wine recs. Atmosphere is top-notch: charming, unpretentious, and buzzy without being loud—feels like a hidden favorite. Love this place!
Super unique place! The drinks were all really good but you really come for the vibe. Everyone was very friendly and the atmosphere was super cozy.
We celebrated my nieces birthday with a party of 12 at this legendary lower East Viennese Mecca, and the food lived up to its reputation. Several of us had the Wiener Schnitzel which was perfectly done with delicious potato and salad side. The vegetarians had eggplant parm schnitzel which they all raved about. The meatballs and sausage sampler were also big hits. I don’t remember which desserts were ordered after several Kostrizers but they were raved about as well. Also a fantastic selection of Austrian beers and wines. We sat inside because we were such a large group which was festive but the outside seating was possibly even nicer on a lovely late fall evening on Orchard street which is a pedestrian mall.
